From the Chairman …

Chemical engineering careers are very rewarding and made interesting through life’s experiences. Activities during the last year for the Indianapolis Section of AIChE are highlighted below:

·         A presentation, “Cash for Clunkers,” was given by Alan Schmidt. It captured the humorous moments of a once in a lifetime opportunity. The presentation was also given by Alan in the local Toastmaster’s group and advanced to higher rounds of competition.

·         Several meetings were held with the Scientech Club. This organization was established in 1918 by a group of business leaders, scientist, engineers, and other professionals to stay informed of new developments. This vision is ongoing. We heard from Powers Energy of America about converting municipal solid waste (MSW) to ethanol using gasification and bacteria. Also, a presentation was given on the history of kidney dialysis, which highlighted the achievements made possible by innovation.

·         We participated in activities at the Children’s Museum during National Chemistry Week and National Engineers Day. More than 800 young students stopped by our booth to hear about industrial operations within the state and find a fun fact and chemical element that matched.

·         A plant tour was held at Sanitec of Indiana to see equipment for destroying infectious compounds in medical wastes by using microwaves. Also, a meeting/presentation was hosted by Xylogenics on the development of new yeasts to convert cellulosic wastes into ethanol.

·         A meeting was held with the Rose-Hulman student chapter of AIChE to talk about chemical engineering experiences.

Our Annual Meeting for election of officers will be held on May 18. Next year’s officers to be voted upon include:

Alan Schmidt, IDEM

John Elliott, IDEM

Past Chairman:

Tom Leas, IDEM

Karl Schnelle, Dow AgroSciences LLC

Newsletter Editor:

Kevin Keating, Eli Lilly

A special thanks is given to Mike Wertz for serving as Vice-Chairman, Chairman, and Past Chairman positions during the last 3 years. Also, John Elliott, Karl Schnelle, and Kevin Keating have volunteered in their positions for several years. Alan Schmidt and Tom Leas have re-volunteered in their roles several times. The following positions are open:

·         We need a new person to volunteer for the Vice-Chairman position. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual to get leadership experience and prepare for the Chairman’s position. Registration and costs will be covered for you to attend the AIChE 2010 Leadership Development Conference (LDC) hosted by the East Tennessee Local Section (http://www.tnengineering.net/AICHE/index.htm) on June 4-6. The weekend program is designed to be an interactive learning experience and provide tools you can take to your Division, Forum, Local Section, Committee or office position.

·         In order to foster closer communication between Local Sections and the global AIChE organization, a new leadership position has been developed - the CIO (Chief Information Officer). The CIO will be a volunteer you will identify from your Section (a Fellow might be an ideal choice) that will serve as a direct link between your Local Section officers and members and the larger AIChE organization. In short, the CIO will be the focal point for communicating grassroots issues and needs to the rest of the AIChE organization and leadership, and help to create member service and value.

Please give me a call at (317) 234-4051, if you would be interested in filling one of these important roles. We hope that you can attend the Annual meeting, enjoy the food, and relax with other chemical engineers/friends.
