From the Chairman …

Please join your fellow chemical engineers for a joint luncheon meeting with Scientech on Monday, February 7, www.scientechclub.org   Scientech has weekly Monday luncheon programs of interest to scientists and engineers.  The February 7 meeting consists of a buffet lunch from 11:15 to noon and introductions and the presentation from noon to 1 PM.  The presentation is Industrial Agriculture and the Global Threat of Antimicrobial Resistance by Stephen Jay, M.D, Professor of Medicine and Public Health, I.U. School of Medicine.  Dr. Jay will discuss our nation’s history of food adulteration and his own work to spread awareness on Capitol Hill.  To encourage attendance the $10 luncheon cost will be reimbursed by your local chapter.  The local pharmaceutical company members may be able to consider it a work related time, while everyone should find it a relevant interesting presentation.  Reservations would be helpful to let your Chairman know who to look for by e-mail at alan.schmidt at att.net or call 317 233-5190 day work or 317 695-5741 cell phone.   Scientech meets at the Knights of Columbus on 71st Street just west of Keystone Avenue in Indianapolis.  People may join the local chapter through the dues statement of the national AIChE or by paying our treasurer, John Elliott, $11 to join the local chapter.

Please contact your Chairman on your ability to volunteer to help on Saturday, February 26, 10 AM to 3 PM at the Children’s museum for Engineer’s Day.  A children’s activity of matching photographs of Indiana industrial activity with descriptions and an experiment on the viscoelastic properties of Silly Putty is anticipated.  Other suggestions are welcome, although there are museum limitations on exposure to any dangerous chemicals.  The Children’s Museum has free parking in the ramp on the west side of Illinois street just north of 30th street in Indianapolis.  The Museum prefers that volunteers complete an information form that is available from your chairman.

The tour and presentation arranged by Caroline Karanja at Organic Power Solutions (OPS) on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 was well attended.  OPS has innovations in pyrolytic technology to achieve renewable energy in the form of pyrochar, pyro-oil and pyro-gas from client waste streams such as agricultural waste, auto shredder residue, auto tires, municipal solid waste, plastics and oil sludge.  John Bales of OPS described and demonstrated the characterization work the company does for client waste streams.  Good conversations followed at John’s Famous Stew.  The contact at OPS was Caroline Karanja.

Our local AIChE Vice-Chairman, Jonathan Adams, moved out of state earlier this year, so your Chairman is actively entertaining volunteers expressing interest to fill the position.  The Vice-chairman is a member of the local executive committee, helps along with other members on chapter activities, and could shift to the chairman position for June 2011 to 2012.  If you are intimidated noting all the national AIChE information that is assembled for the Distillates newsletter, our very capable newsletter editor, Kevin Keating, handles that and it is not a duty for the Vice-Chairman or Chairman.

If you have a suggestion for a speaker or a tour possibility in 2011 please contact your Chairman.   A tour, presentation or activity is expected in March or April and election of officers at a dinner meeting in May.
